RECENT EVENT
OTTAWA - AUGUST 9, 2002
(PROTEST TO STOP HOME CARE CUTS)
at the Ontario Ministry of Health, 75 Albert Street

Our Coalition to Stop Home Care Cuts had a protest on August 9th.  The issue was the recent home care cuts to 5,900 people who were clients at the Ottawa Community Care Access Centre (CCAC).  We had a peaceful protest.  Some of the placards read:  "Thanks for nothing Ernie Eves"  "Reinstate Home Care Funding"  "5,900 people lose home care"

The media that showed up were: CJOH-TV News, CFRA Radio, and
The NewRO TV.  The media coverage was comprehensive, fair, and accurate.

Chris Day of the CJOH-TV spoke to Sandra Golding, Executive Director of the Ottawa Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) by telephone for his story on the TV.  Sandra Golding had informed Chris Day on tv that a new budget for home care would be
forthcoming the week of August l2th.  After 2 emails and 3 telephone calls,  Sandra Golding sent Sue Clark an email saying she would get in touch with Sue.  Sue found out from Sandra's secretary on August 23rd that there is no budget that she is aware of.  Sandra is on holidays and will reach Sue on September 9th ???...  Ottawa CCAC supposedly going to have a community meeting ???... who knows ......

Chris Day of CJOH TV wants to continue to cover this story.  We want to thank the media for a job well done.

The only politician's office to show up was a rep named Chuck from Judy Wasylycia-Leis' MP's office who is the Federal NDP Health Critic.  Thank you for supporting our cause.  Home care is an important issue and we shall be lobbying other politicians' offices in the future.

Thanks to Anne, Michelle, and Pat for their informative interviews that they gave to the press.  Thanks to Jane who made a delicious lunch for all of us and which we had at l0 Rideau Street.  Thank you for all of you who showed up and supported our cause.  We need your continued support.

We will have many more events in the future and will post them on this web site.

FUTURE EVENT

COMING THIS FALL
TRIP TO TORONTO, ERNIE EVES OFFICE
Our Coalition wants to send some people with disabilities to Toronto to go to Premier Ernie Eve's office to demand that the Tory government reinstate funding to the home care.

We will lobby our city coucillors to sponsor our trip. It will be a one done day event. We plan to have a press room at Queen's Park to answer questions from the media

We gave the city council meeting on August 28th a letter from our Coalition to Stop Home Care Cuts to sponsor our trip to see Ernie Eves. Our budget was $l,500 for 4 persons with disabilites to go by train with 4 attendants for one day to Toronto. We had a September 9th deadline to our letter. We have had no formal reply to our letter given to us re our request. We have however heard from Ms. Wilkie from the City of Ottawa who has informed us that no action has been taken on our letter.

Mr. Alex Munter a city councillor informed me that Ms. St. Jean from People Services is planning a delegation to Toronto. I was informed most recently in October that apparently no delegation is being planned at this moment. The red tape of politics at city hall in Ottawa, hmmm ...........

We hope to update this page often with new photos.
